Dance Types: International Standard and American Smooth
International Standard: Overview
International style of ballroom dancing which was standardized in England and worldwide. Emphasis is placed on the “closed position” in all figures. Couples may not separate in Foxtrot, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango or Quickstep, and strive for partnership moving together at all times. This style of dance is mainly used in Dancesport competitions and is well popularized on Dancing With Stars.
American Smooth: Overview
American Smooth can be best described as a form of ballroom dancing with an enhanced repertoire of easy to perform, yet exciting steps. Dances in the smooth category: Waltz. Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz.
All basic principles and the technique of ballroom dancing still apply, however partners are not required to maintain a continuous body contact. Lifting the body contact restriction allows the dancers to perform steps such as: lady under arm turns, spins, side by side positions, parallel turns, dips, drops and other variations that would never be allowed in the traditional ballroom dancing. Anyone who has ever learned ballroom dancing will find American Smooth very easy to learn, yet refreshing due to its interesting, rich syllabus.
Dance Types: Social Latin and Competitive Latin
Latin dance is a fast-paced, often sensual, partner dance characterized by sexy hip movements. However, hip movements are not intentional in any of the Latin dances. The hip motion is a natural consequence of changing weight from one foot to the other.
Social Latin Dance
Social Latin dances include salsa, mambo, merengue, rumba, bachata, cumbia and the Argentine tango. There are many dances which were popular in the first part of the 20th century, but which are now of only historical interest.
The category of Latin dances in the international Dancesport competitions consists of the cha-cha, rumba, samba, paso doble, and also the jive of United States origin. This style of Latin has been popularized by ABC’s Dancing With The Stars and So You Think You Can Dance.
